Drystanes Curling Club held an Invitational Bonspiel at Greenacres on Wednesday 26th October 2016 to celebrate their founding 50 years ago. Representatives were invited from 12 clubs, with whom Drystanes have had a close connection over the years. Each team comprised two guests (from the same club) together with two (or three) members of Drystanes. They played a mini bonspiel of two 4-end games, followed by Dinner, speeches and the presentation of prizes.
RCCC President Clive Thomson (himself a former member) proposed the toast to Drystanes. Photographs can be seen in the Gallery. A more detailed report will follow. With only 4 matches remaining in the Fulton Trophy, the current position can be found here.
Congratulations are due to Team F (John Fingland (Skip), Scott Martin, Colin Semple, Peter Stewart & Brian Anderson) on winning the Fulton Trophy with games in hand. Team B (Drew Fulton (Skip), Steven Harte, Max McGill & Dhruva Prakash) had offered stiff opposition earlier in the season but fell away in the final stages. Congratulations are due to John Fingland (Skip), Drew Fulton, Graeme Nicolson and Mark Lombardi on retaining the Arthur Frame Trophy last night by beating Glasgow XX by 8 shots to 6 in the Final. This is the premier competition in Glasgow Province with the winning team going on to represent Glasgow Province in the Scottish Province Championships next season. This is also the third time that Drystanes have won the Arthur Frame in the past 5 years, having never won it previously.
Yesterday's winning team was the same team as last year, albeit with Drew & Graeme swapping positions. John & Mark also played in the winning team in 2011-12. Our Points competition was held last Thursday, 4th February. 14 competitors took part, illness, injury and workloads all depleted the entry in the days leading up to the competition.
All nine disciplines were completed and Alan Lindsay retains the trophy with 41 points, one more than last year. Fraser Munro was second on 37 points with John Fingland and Scott Martin a further 4 points behind on 33. Alan & Fraser are invited to represent Drystanes in the Glasgow Province Points competition on Thursday 31st March at 7.50pm. We are now into the second half of the Jack Turner leagues; the current positions can be found here. Team 5, skipped by Charles Scott, have already qualified for the semi-finals. The other three places are still up for grabs.
The Team to tour USA in January 2017 has been announced and includes Clarke Perry.
Congratulations to Clarke on being selected. the full team can be seen here President Drew Fulton and Treasurer Malcolm Gauld were at the Glynhill Ladies International today, Saturday, to watch Team Barbezat playing in their final game. They are a young Swiss team visiting Braehead for the first time and, although they lost all of their games, three were only by a single shot. When I spoke to them yesterday, they were not sure if they were enjoying themselves, having just been heavily beaten by Team Sidorova, (the current European Champions) but are hoping to come back next year. I presented them with Drystanes Pin Badges
Photographs of Drew and Malcolm presenting the girls with Dress Stewart scarves can be seen here. The Glynhill Ladies International 2016 will run from Thursday 14th January through to Sunday 17th January 2016.
Full details of the draw can be found here. As in previous years, Drystanes have sponsored one of the teams and this year we have drawn Team Barbezat from Switzerland (see above). Do come along to support them at some point in the competition, and if your luck is in, get your photograph taken! President Drew and Treasurer Malcolm will be making a presentation to the girls after one of their games. Congratulations to Team Drystanes 1 (William Johnson, Mark Lombardi, Fraser Munro & Colin Keir) for winning their section in the David Duncan Trophy. They now progress to the semi-final on Wednesday 20th January where they meet C & R. Thanks are also due to those who subbed in the odd game.
Team Drystanes 2 were less successful and did not qualify for the semi-finals. Full details of the results can be found here |
