The final of this year's Jack Turner Trophy was played at Braehead last night with Robin Turner's team beating John Duthie's team 5-3. Robin's team comprised Colin Kier at third, Jack Pearson (subbing for Yvonne Chalmers) at second and John Fingland at lead. John's team comprised Douglas Dewar at third, Fraser Munro at second and Graeme Nicolson at lead. The game was closely fought over seven ends with John having a chance to snatch victory with the last stone of the game - a difficult double takeout without wrecking on any of his own stones to lie four. In the end he managed to take out one of Robin's two counting stones to lie one.
Seven curlers took part in this year's Points competition at Braehead. All ten disciplines were completed and the top spots went to last year's winner Gerry McCormack who tied with John Fingland with 32 points and in third place Scott Martin with 31 points. Scoring was pretty modest this year and I would like to have reported that the ice was very difficult to read but I think that would be unfair! There were only seven points between first and last place.
Unfortunately Gerry cannot make it but I will represent Drystanes in the Province Points competition at Braehead next Wednesday at 7.50pm. 18 curlers took part in this year's Xmas bonspiel at Greenacres. With one late call off, Robin who had planned to attend as a spectator, was pressed into service and got to grips with delivering with a stick very quickly. Thanks are due to his first round opposition, Jack, for passing on tips.
It was great to see Margaret and John (Fraser) who joined us for dinner. On interesting ice (the ice technician has been struggling with some broken kit leading to some humps and hollows) the clear winners were Gordon, Drew and Jack. The "other prize" for the evening was a close result which was "won" by Malcolm, Colin and Jim. Thanks to President Robin who bought us all a drink after the curling. Congratulations to Scott Martin & Max McGill on winning the final against John Fingland & Colin Semple in this year's Pairs Competition which was played at Greenacres.
12 members took part in two mini leagues of three teams followed by semi finals and a final. The beaten semi finalists were Drew Fulton & Jim Naismith and Andrew Henderson & Jack Pearson. It was good to see Margaret Cathcart and Robin Turner spectating and we look forward to see them on the ice in the new year. The final of the Jack Turner Trophy was played tonight at Greenacres with Gordon Leslie's team winning 8-4 against Jim Naismith's team. The winning side comprised Gordon Leslie, Max McGill (subbing for Stuart Biggart), Andrew Henderson (subbing for Robin Turner) and John Fingland. Jim's team comprised Jim Naismith, Peter Stewart, Iain Munro (subbing for Fraser Munro) and John Duthie (subbing for Ian McNair).
This year's Points Competition was contested by 15 members over four sheets. Nine disciplines were completed and the top spots went to Gerry McCormack with 43 points, then Alan Lindsay with 42 points and in third place Fraser Munro with 39 points.
As in previous years we would hope that Gerry and Alan will be able to represent Drystanes in the Province Points competition at Braehead on Thursday 6th April at 7.50pm. From Pamela Stephen at Braehead
