The Final of the Jack Turner Trophy was not decided last night until the final stone came to rest in the 4-foot circle. Team 4, skipped by Jack Pearson, had largely controlled the game: every time that Team 6, skipped by Gerry McCormack, tried to build a head, Jack (or his third Dhru Prakash) put a stone in place to limit Gerry to a single shot or, more often, nick the end!
Going into the final end three shots adrift, Gerry managed to get one shot buried early with another at the front of the house that he kept trying to nudge in, whilst Jack tried to remove it. My memory is that Gerry managed to nudge it in with his second last stone, Jack missed, and by dint of some powerful sweeping from Charles & Robin, Gerry drew his final stone to count three by a whisker.
So it all came down to a draw shot challenge. Jack won the toss & elected to go second. Gerry drew to the middle of the 8-foot in the back of the house, not a bad effort, all things considered. After the stone was measured and removed, Jack then drew comfortably into the 4-foot with a little help from his sweepers. No pressure whatsoever!
Congratulations to Team 4: Jack Pearson (Skip), Dhru Prakash (Third), Scott Martin (Second) & Ian McNair (Lead) on winning the Jack Turner Trophy. For the record, in the final, Steven Harte subbed for Scott Martin who was away on holiday and Colin Keir subbed for Ian McNair who is recovering from an operation.
This completes a very successful season for Jack, having also been in the winning team for the Fulton Trophy. It just goes to show that, as a selector, he sure knows how to pick his team-mates! Who wants to volunteer to be a selector next season. One vacancy. Please form an orderly queue.
