Drystanes added another trophy to the cabinet last night when, with a fair degree of piracy (pardon the Halloween Pun), they won the Stainton Crosthwaite Trophy for finishing second in the Glasgow Province Bonspiel.
Last week, three members of the Drystanes team of Andrew, Malcolm, Charles & Jim arrived to find that only two of the opposition (Crossmyloof) had turned out. So, rather than be penalised for being a player short, Drystanes were awarded the tie by default. The first act of piracy!
Last night the second Drystanes team of Craig, Robin, Bill & Douglas faced Glasgow Ladies and executed the second act of piracy! After 4 ends, Glasgow Ladies were leading by 7 shots to Nil, and were not flattered by the score. They were playing very steadily whilst Drystanes were all over the place. Drystanes finally got onto the board with a four in the fifth end, albeit it required a good take-out from Craig with his final stone to convert a two into four. Glasgow Ladies continued to play very steadily until the last stone of the sixth end when the wheels suddenly came off. Lying one, Liz Paul attempted a difficult take-out through a port for a big end but unfortunately only managed to raise a Drystanes stone into the house for a steal. In the seventh (& final end), Drystanes at last hit form piling stones into the house whilst Glasgow Ladies equally spectacularly lost form. By the time Liz came to play her final stone, she was facing three, or possibly four, Drystanes shots and her attempt at an open raise was only marginally heavy and Craig stepped in to sweep it back just past the third Drystanes stone for an 8-7 win that we really didn’t deserve.
Both skips agreed that it had been a very friendly game played in the true spirit of curling, with a lot of good banter, on what was a quirky sheet of ice where the stones never quite ran as expected.
We were even more surprised when Bobby Corbett announced that Drystanes had finished in second place. Whitecraigs won the L I-B CUP for winning the Province Bonspiel whilst Old Glenalmond took the poisoned chalice (a.k.a. the Friendship Trophy) by finishing third.
